People differ in their needs and their wants. There is always some difference between the quality and quantity of the same work on the same job being done by two different people. Performance appraisals of Employees are necessary to understand each employee’s abilities, competencies, and relative merit and worth for the organization. Performance appraisal rates the employees in terms of their performance.

Performance appraisal is necessary to measure the performance of the employees and the organization to check the progress towards the desired goals and aims.

Nowadays the employees get paid according to what they contribute the focus of the organization is turning to performance management and specifically to individual performance. Performance appraisal helps to rate the performance of the employees and evaluate their contribution towards the organizational goals. If the process of performance appraisals is formal and properly structured, it helps the employees to clearly understand their roles and responsibilities and give direction to the individual’s performance. It helps to align the individual performances with the organizational goals and also review their performance.

When we are talking about the needs and wants of the employees as I am tall before each everyone's basic needs and wants are different and the diagram of the hierarchy shows it very clearly.


How it works?

There will be different approaches to performance appraisal in different companies. Most of them hold annual reviews included assessment sessions annually or quarterly. Some companies use less formal than annual assessments. Management provides frequent feedback to the employees in the system which help them check their performances periodically.

Depending on the company and the job role performance appraisal can be measured by different methods. A few common methods doing performance appraisal are:

  •        Graphic Rating scale Method
  •        Ranking Method
  •       Checklist Method
  •     Management by objective Methods
  •       360 – degree feedback
  •    General performance appraisal

The HR department is one of the most important resources that an organization has. The company should be able to understand where its employees stand in performance and productivity. Some of the objectives are:

  •  Provide Feedback
  • Downsize or right–side
  •  Promote the right person
  •  Set goals and measure goals
  •  Improve work performance
  • Improving overall organizational performance

 

Characteristics of an effective performance appraisal system

Certain factors to be considered when adopting an appraisal system. A good appraisal system satisfies these characteristics according to the requirements:

  •  Well defined performance criteria
  • Accuracy and reliability in results
  • Post Appraisal Interview
  • Time-saving
  • Continuous Feedback
